Abstract:
Objective To explore perfectionism and coping style of patients with major depression and their relationship. Methods A case--control study was implemented. 65 inpatients or outpatients who met ICD--10 criteria for major depression and 65 controls without mental disorder were recruited, matched by gender,age(±3),and education background. Chinese Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale (CFMPS) and Coping Style Questionnaire were self--reported by the subjects. Results The patient group had higher scores in total score of CFMPS [-(90. 05±17.48)vs. (68. 01±10.23)], concern o- ver mistakes[(24.46± 7. 40) vs. (12.38±5.07)], doubts about actions [(14. 89±3. 79) vs. (8.26 ± 3.03)],parental expectations [-(12. 45±4. 24)vs. (8. 76±4.01)],escape E(0. 61± 0. 26)vs. (0. 27± 0.24)],fantasy [(0. 49±0.24)vs. (0. 32±0. 15)] and self--accusation E(0. 56±0.26)vs. (0. 29± 0.14)] than the control group (P 〈 0.05). The patient group had lower scores in seeking help in turn [(0. 33±0.14)vs. (0. 52±0.23)], solving problems [(0.28±0.13)vs. (0. 59±0.27)] than the control groups (P 〈0.05). The total score of CFMPS had positive relationship with escape and self--accusation (r =0.58, P 〈 0.01;r =0.48, P 〈0.01) and negative relationship with seeking help in turn and solving problems (r =--0.55,P〈 0.01;r=-0.55,P〈 0.01). Conclusions Compared to normal subjects, the patients with major depression may desire to achieve higher standards of performance and make excessive use of the immature coping styles.
